1970s Goodpasture


The following is a transcription of the wrap-around copy on the  menu given to diners at the popular Springs restaurant of Goodpasture ownership years. (Hoping someone out there might have copy of menu inside to send with actual food offerings and '70s prices.) Impish personality of Winston comes through in places. No idea if there was ever a second edition.

In 2001, a facsimile edition was added as cover-only to current menu for bit of nostalgia, but owner didn't like it; he ordered it removed. Maybe he couldn't appreciate wacky humor of line, "As you sit here reading this expensive menu..."

Mineral Springs is Page from Past

Stewart Mineral Springs is alive and well in Siskiyou county.

Discovered in the 1850s by Henry Stewart, an early immigrant to Northern California, it is the last mineral spring to remain in operation in the county. Mr. Stewart, gravely ill, was brought to the Springs by the Indians and regained his health in the healing waters.

Long before the coming of the white men, the Indians were aware of the healing qualities of the mineral waters of these springs.

After his recovery, Stewart was fascinated by the Springs and sought to buy the property so its waters could be used to heal his fellow man. His dream came true when he purchased a 160 acre parcel including the Springs from the Central Pacific Railroad.

He constructed a small bathhouse and operated the area as a health spa until his death in 1915.

After the death of Stewart, his daughter Katy and her husband Edward remained and operated the Springs. On July 4, 1948 a fire destroyed their home and a cookhouse which was utilized by health seekers staying in the tents and cabins while taking treatments in the mineral baths.

The popularity of Stewart Springs declined after the fire and in 1953 Katy gave the Springs to the Scottish Rite Order of Sacramento.

The Masons added cabins and apartments, enlarged the bathhouse, and the popularity of the mineral springs began to increase.

The present owners, Winston and Carol Goodpasture, along with their two children, Sandy and Greg, now operate the Springs as a family enterprise. Winston is the afternoon bathhouse lady, while Carol takes the morning shift. Greg is doing the cooking and Sandy is our pretty chambermaid.

As you sit here reading this expensive menu, does this thought run through your mind?

What does it cost to stay in this little corner of the forest. Well, one of our housekeeping apartments with kitchen, bathroom, all the linen including towels, pots and pans, etc., runs $9.00 per day, or $56.00 per week. We also have a two bedroom apartment with living room that is $14.00 per day or $85.00 per week. The cabins you see on the side of the hill are $6.00 per day, or $35.00 per week. No bathrooms in the cabins, gang. Last but not least, we have this neat little cottage that everyone falls in love with, including us; the rate is $10.00 per day and $65.00 per week. Let's face it, our rates are ridiculous; Motel 6 has lower rates but no trees.

If you're planning to get married, why not hold the wedding here at the Springs. We can cater what ever you have in mind. On the other hand, if you're planning a divorce, we can provide a place for you to be alone to brood.

Our answer is: try seven baths in a row and see.

People from all over the country are enjoying health to a greater degree as a result of the mineral baths. The baths seem to be good for a lot of things such as arthritis, rheumatism, ulcers, aching backs, acne, piles... In your grandfather's day mineral baths were far more popular than today. In those days, people relied more on natural methods of healing. With the advent of modern medicine we have relied more on drugs to cure our bodies.

The Arthritis Foundation states that more than 17,000,000 people in the United States suffer from this disease; or one in every eleven people. When you start to add up the figures for the number of diabetics, heart patients, ulcer and cancer victims you begin to wonder how far off base grandfather really was.

Springs Nears One Hundred Years Old

Stewart Springs will reach its hundred-year-old mark come 1975. That's a long time to be in hot water.

As Carol, our lovely bathhouse lady was heard to remark, (she does that you know), the idea here at the Springs is to provide hot water and things like that. (this girl has a fixation about hot water.)

Any way, the real idea here is a place where you feel at home. Without rules and regulations. Without TV, newspapers and telephone, neon signs, traffic and smog.

We know it takes awhile to realize that there will be no TV tonight. But try a book for a change. We have games to play. Chess, Monopoly, stuff like that. This is very beautiful country. Try and see as much of it as you can.

Dining at the Springs can be enjoyed indoors or outside on the deck among the trees. For service go to the counter and place your order. If all goes well, and assuming you have not been surly with the cook, he will bring your order to your table. You are encouraged to watch the cook at work, play darts, or perhaps leapfrog over other diners (if they so permit).

Board must be paid in advance (With Beans $15.00).

Boarders not permitted to talk to the cook.

Pocketing at meals strictly forbidden.

Extras allowed - potatoes for dinner.

No whistling while eating.

Gentlemen will provide own wash water.

Towel bags are at the end of the house.

Lodgers must furnish their own straw.

Extra charges for seats around the stove.

Beds in the bar reserved for regular customers.

Persons sleeping on the bar requested not to take off their shoes.

Each man must sweep up his own bed.

Rule violators will be shot.

Meet Jenny the hoss - if you should see a reddish-brown horse wandering around, don't be alarmed. this is just our pesty pet Jenny. She likes to inspect the tops of cars. One of her other interests is trying to get into the bathhouse. We think she wants a bath, but it may be that she just likes people. Anyway, she is a nice horse; feed her a carrot, she'll follow you anywhere.

Why is Stewart Springs only open from the first of April to the 31st of October?

Answer: No one seems to know. We think Mr. Stewart started it. We blame everything on Mr. Stewart.

Question: Is the fishing any good around here?

Answer: that depends on the fisherman. We had a guy here one day who swore there was no fish in this stream, just as another guy walked by with five fish over the limit. Try worms.

Every so often we read about a food faddist. It is usually some tongue in cheek remark, about some nut who eats health foods and take vitamin pills. Not to mention the ultimate sin, not eating meat.

We recently read about the Seventh Day Adventists. It seems they have the lowest incidence of cancer and heart trouble ever recorded. Science is now making a study of this. Could it be that proper nutrition is the answer?

Callie Callahan, now 88 years old, was the first person to bathe in a tub installed by Mr. Stewart.

She and her husband helped him build his cabin and run the pipe from the Spring to the one tub that was the beginning of the bath house, and so she had the honor of being the first official bather.

You may have noticed a very short legged German Shepard dog racing your car as you came up the road. that is chuck the wonder dog. When we look at him we all wonder...

He has been clocked at 35 miles an hour, quite a feat for those short legs.

According to our restaurant-supply man our little kitchen doesn't have a ghost of a chance. He claims a restaurant can't survive today without using frozen foods and canned goods. Watch this space to see if we make it.
